Samsung Galaxy Tab - Touchscreen Android Tablet
http://galaxytab.samsungmobile.com/
http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/02/s...y-tab-preview/
7" WSVGA (1024x600) TFT-LCD capacitive touchscreen, Android 2.2 (Froyo), 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 (same CPU as the Galaxy S [1GHz], iPad [1GHz], iPhone 4 [~800MHz], iPhone 3GS [600MHz]), PowerVR SGX540 (same GPU as the Galaxy S, & better than the iPhone 4 / 3GS / iPad's PowerVR SGX 535), 512MB RAM (same as the Galaxy S & iPhone 4, double that of the iPad), 16GB/32GB internal storage plus a microSD slot for up to 32GB more, GSM/GPRS/EDGE/3G/HSPA, WiFi N, Bluetooth 3, 3MP rear camera + 1.3MP front camera, Adobe Flash, HD video, usual sensors...
Looks very nice. No official price yet, but I've seen comments that suggest it will cost more than the iPad, which kinda kills it dead for me before it's even released...

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab - Touchscreen Android Tablet
There are a number of "APads" coming out, some out there already but I get a feeling a few Apple contenders will launch before Christmas.

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab - Touchscreen Android Tablet
It does look nice, butas has been it definitely needs to be cheaper than an iPad.

Saw a couple of news itmes on this last night and both stated that the Samsung and Toshiba pads would be priced significantly cheaper than the Apple.
It doesn't really bother me though as I can't bear these touch screen tablet type devices.

Me likes
However I don't think my OH would allow such a device in our house...we already have 4 laptops

More expensive than the iPad: http://www.metro.co.uk/tech/839904-s...rices-emerging

UK retailer eXpansys is offering the Galaxy Tab for pre-order for a wallet-lightening £679.99 for the smaller 16GB version - more expensive than all but the most expensive iPad (the 64GB WiFi + 3G model, which costs £699).

Unless eXpansys is overcharging or put a speculative price...

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab - Touchscreen Android Tablet
I can get the basic iPad for £350 so I'd have to be very much convinced it's better etc to consider the galaxy tablet.

But to that extent?
I think people misjudge the price of electronic devices in this category because they are used to seeing their phones subsided. When people objected to the price of the iPad I was pointing out it was similar to the price of a unlocked phone.
An unlocked Samsung Galaxy S is around £400 so for their tablet to be much less than an iPad (£519) is unrealistic.

Samsung strategy will mimic that of the handset business, they will push the subsidised contracts and not so much the unlocked versions. This allows them to undercut the iPad and say it's cheaper.

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab - Touchscreen Android Tablet
The upcoming Archos range of Android tablets look good - might get myself the 101 for my birthday in November, depending on the price....

Yeah, I can see them doing that.
Puts me right off, though. I already have a phone contract, I don't want *another* contract, just for 3G access for a tablet.
If I were to get an iPad, at least I could save £100 & go for the WiFi only version. If I went anywhere with it that didn't have WiFi, I'd just tether it to my iPhone.

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab - Touchscreen Android Tablet
Exactly, nobody is seriously going to replace their phone with this and few people will want dual contracts. It's a slouching on the sofa watching media and browsing device and occasional roaming device when away from home for long periods. Unless it's priced significantly less than the i-pad it'll die a death, iOS may be restrictive in all kinds of stupid ways but its a far more 'mature' OS and almost perfectly suited to how a pad is usually used, with the exception of Flash. It'll probably take till Gingerbread for Android to be at the same level.

Oh dear. Epic fail by Samsung if those prices are correct.

Which means, conversely, that there's almost no added benefit to using the Tab over a phone. It's not big enough. Web browsing doesn't have greater fidelity. I don't get more out of Twitter. A magazine app would be cramped.

There is no way to not feel like a total dorkface while typing on this thing. In portrait, it's like tapping on a massive, nerdy phone. In landscape, it's just dumb.

This thing is just a mess. It's like a tablet drunkenly hooked up with a phone, and then took the fetus swimming in a Superfund cleanup site. The browser is miserable, at least when Flash is enabled. It goes catatonic, scrolling is laggy, and it can get laughably bad. When better browsing is half the reason to go for a larger screen, that's insanity.
(snip)
Typically, the point of a compromise is to bring together the best of both sides. The Tab is like a compromise's evil twin, merging the worst of a tablet and the worst of a phone. It has all of the input problems of a tablet, with almost none of the consumption benefits.
